Mildred was a widow for 3 years when we met. At 88 yrs. old she was working in the garden of her 850 sq. ft. home where she and her husband had raised their 4 kids. Over the next 11 years we would meet together at her house and once when the topic of living alone came up, she would share in her sweet Southern voice and in all seriousness, “Well now, I just don’t mind living alone because Jesus is always with me!” In coming to know her for over a decade I could see that it was true. The peace she exuded, even in the face of heartache and loss, health issues, and at times isolation, was real.
Jesus was always with her.
The one who promised his followers that he would be with them to the very end of the age, and the one who said to the Jews under spirit-crushing legalism in Israel over 2000 years ago is the same Jesus who is calling out to us today.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matt 11:28-29
We may have problems and maybe they aren’t going to go away any time soon or perhaps not at all, but what better way to deal with it all except with peace of mind and in such a way that doesn’t cause more turmoil?
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matt 11:30)
Jesus, the one known as a friend of sinners is thee friend to turn to and He’s already proved it to us.
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8
It seems to me the world is spinning out of control, despite even the best efforts to quell it. Life is dangerous and people are becoming more desperate, even with the many remedies being pushed. Still, there is One who for more than 2000 years is promising to give us rest for our souls. He is but a prayer away. We do have a friend to turn to.
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
1 Peter 5:7
Let’s turn to Him.
